Lithuanian National Drama Theatre Showcase 2013

"Katedra" by Oskaras Koršunovas. Photo © D.Matvejevas

This spring Lithuanian National Drama Theatre will hold its second showcase. From 25th to 29th of April the theatre will present newest plays by Eimuntas Nekrošius, Oskaras Koršunovas, Gintaras Varnas, Rolandas Atkočiūnas, Yana Ross and László Bagossy (Hungary) for foreign viewers. All these plays reflect a changing image of renewed Lithuanian National Drama Theatre. The profile of this season is represented by performances based on acclaimed classical pieces of national and world dramaturgy. Most of directors working at the theatre this season exemplify one distinctive generation of 40 year-olds.

Main creative borderlines of the 73rd season of Lithuanian National Drama Theatre are drawn by premiere plays directed by two leaders of Lithuanian theatre – Oskaras Koršunovas and Gintaras Varnas. Koršunovas directed one of the most important and fundamental pieces of Lithuanian classical dramaturgy – „Cathedral“ by Justinas Marcinkevičius, premiered last December. Gintaras Varnas‘ will interpret Euripides’ „Bacchae“ for the first time in the history of Lithuanian theatre. Both plays invoke mythology of national and world culture and reflect the very existential tragedy of modern state as well as of modern man.

„Hunting Scenes from Bavaria“, written by German playwright Martin Sperr and directed by Lithuanian director Rolandas Atkočiūnas brings up sharp insights in exceptionally intolerant Lithuanian society. Almost the same biting social issues will be uncovered in Yana Ross‘ performance of  „Red Shoelaces“, based on a contemporary Lithuanian play.

László Bagossy, one of the brightest personalities in Hungarian theatre today, will present a fresh interpretation on a timeless piece „Liliom“ by Ferenc Molnár. A whole selection of newest premieres by LNDT will be crowned with the newest piece by Eimuntas Nekrošius. His „Heaven”, shown for the first time last fall at Teatro Olimpico, Italy, will have its debut at LNDT – the very place Nekrošius‘ „Divine Comedy“ was premiered last spring.

We invite You to extend Your hopefully pleasant acquaintance with Lithuanian National Drama Theatre this season!

Audronis Liuga
Art Director of Lithuanian National Drama Theatre

Tribute to Dimos Avdeliodis’ theatre

"Alexander the Great and the cursed Dragon" by Dimos Avdeliosis

January 11th to February 26th 2013

The theatrical presence of Dimos Avdeliodis at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation

5 different plays of the last 3 years in 8 nights

Five different and notable theatrical performances, directed by Dimos Avdeliodis during the last three years will be presented afresh by the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation during January and February 2013.

Dimos Avdeliodis has been identified with two emblematic performances of Greek theatre, the Forms of the Viziinos work, in 1992 and Alexander the Great and the Cursed Dragon, in 2007.

The extraordinary common character which all of his performances have, is the designation of the word, as main factor towards the understanding of the meaning as well as the peculiar use of the visual arts elements and the lighting within this spirit.

Avdeliodis himself supports that “Aim of every performance is the designation of the feelings and the notion which overflow the mind and the heart of the writer. Therefore we have to consider that every single text is just like an orchestral score, which has to be “read” properly, in order to be listened the way its creator would wish.”

The Michael Cacoyannis Foundation offers the opportunity to the ones who haven’t attended any of the five performances of D. Avdeliodis and his partners to enjoy them in an extraordinary “festival”.
