2nd Ioannina Street Theater Festival

Ioannina Street Theater Festival is coming back for its second year from 29 to 31 August 2013. During the festival, teams and individual artists from Greece and abroad will present an artistically alternating program for all ages including theatrical plays, music shows, puppet, circus and dance performances. Moreover, workshops for adults and children will take place as well as arts and crafts exhibitions.

Before the official beginning of Ioannina Street Theater Festival, the audience on Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 will get first taste of what is coming next with the implementation of two events, while different seminars will start running on Monday 26 by acclaimed artists: Construction and puppet animation, aerial acrobatics and a seminar on movement.

All the programmed events will take place in public sites of the city, central streets and squares, and locations of natural beauty and multicultural memory, while in case of rain they will be hosted indoors.

« WOYZECK » by Andriy Zholdak, in BÜCHNER international festival

WOYZECK

Woyzeck and Marie in an aquarium or escaping to outer space? At any rate, this requires a great deal of hardhats. Who can free us from this narcissistic hall of mirrors, who can cut the tubes we are all tied to? The powers that be have their hands full in this production, yet they also get their just desserts. Zholdak’s Woyzeck displays humanity as if it were an exhibit in a cinemascopic glass case and thus throws an utterly theatrical, dreamlike look at the condition of being caught between woman and man, poor and rich, servant and master, drives and morals, animals and god: A surreal, anarchistic and wickedly humorous encyclopaedia of life and art from which no one can escape. Naturally, there’s a coyote in it, too.

Andriy Zholdak has received many awards, including the 2004 UNESCO Prize for the Performing Arts. His Woyzeck was staged in 2008 for the German Culture Festival in Ukraine – organised by the German embassy and the Goethe Institute Kiev – in cooperation with the ensemble of the Cherkasy State Academic Music and Drama Theatre named T. Shevchenko and with the dramaturgical support of Carl Hegemann.

Büchner international theatre festival 22.-30.06.2012

IN FOCUS: WOYZECK, WOUND OF THE WORLD

When we initially put our festival feelers out into the world a year and a half ago, we could sense that we were about to encounter quite a few Woyzeck revenants. But even we were surprised to find that nearly three quarters of the productions we viewed were dedicated to the famous soldier.

‘Woyzeck is still busy shaving his captain, eating his prescribed peas, tormenting his Marie with the dullness of his love, his population turned into a state.’ It is plain to see that the world is not nearly finished with this fragment – which means that the illustrious speech Heiner Müller delivered upon receiving the Büchner Prize in Darmstadt in 1985 continues to be highly relevant today: ‘A text that has been abused by theatres time and time again, which happened to a twenty-three-year-old whose eyelids were cut away at birth by the fates, who was blasted by fever into orthography, a structure like something that originates during fortune-telling when one trembles in apprehension of a glimpse into the future, blocking the entrance into paradise like some sleepless angel, in which the innocence of writing plays found its home.’

Today, nearly thirty years after these words were spoken, the diagnosis still holds true: Woyzeck the play will continue to undergo theatrical martyrdom everywhere where the world is not yet the way it should be, just as Woyzeck the man will continue to be blighted and disgraced, seemingly without end, until he ultimately unloads all that he has endured onto his Marie in a last fatal outburst. However, having to bear this cross like an allegorical Christ figure is apparently not detrimental to this restlessly persistent text. And it will continue to do so until redemption comes in the form of the promised saviour, a potentially ambivalent wonder of the world (for the north/west):

‘WOYZECK is an open wound. Woyzeck lives where the dog is buried, the dog’s name is Woyzeck. We are all waiting for his resurrection with dread and/or hope that the dog will return as a wolf. The wolf will come from the south.’ (Müller) On our search for Büchner’s influence in the here and now, we feel an obligation to provide due space for this international Woyzeck during the festival, so that we may learn to look more closely at as well as beyond ourselves through his eternally feverish and delusional eyes.

Workshop by Ricci/Forte: Beneath the Roses

New Text New Theatre Festival which is going to be executed by GalataPerform for the second time between May 20-26 entertains Ricci/Forte whom have considerably been debated in the recent years. This year’s theme of New Text New Theatre is: ‘Borders’. Proof readings, discussions and workshops of the first plays of novel playwrights will be carried out throughout the festival. The international guests of the festival are the divergent cronies Ricci/Forte.

Ricci/Forte who represent the Italian Contemporary Theatre in the international festivals with their own plays: “Macadamia Nut Brittle”, “Grimmless”, “%100 Furious”, “Abbastarduna”, “Pinter’s Anatomy” and “Imitation of Death” will be in İstanbul between May 23-27. In the New Text New Theatre Festival, “Macadamia Nut Brittle” is going to be presented as reading theatre; “Grimmless” will be played as a video; Ricci/Forte will realize a workshop called ‘’Beneath the Roses”. The workshop is available only for 20 participants and will be in Galata Hamursuz Fırını between 10.30-16.30 during May 24-25-26. The workshop will last 3 days and present a challenge to the players both physically and psychologically focusing on body, voice, and courage. Stated by them very concisely: ‘No more stories about characters, or events to be worn such clothes in a sale of Zara and H&M but fragments, our pure and simple skin to be removed to reveal the ferocity of our fallibility: a search of the tumults of our passions, understood as an escape from any gag of role.’

The workshop will be in Italian and consecutively translated into Turkish

When in Rome & Language

(Staged Play-Reading)

When in Rome (7:00PM)

Written by: Öznur Şahin
Directed by: Mesut Arslan
Performers: Murat Karasu, Özden Çiftçi, Pervin Bağdat, Arda Çetinkaya

The boyfriend of a young woman who lives with her landlady in the same apartment, comes to stay with her for a short time. The young woman, Ayşen, has to hide this situation which her family knows from her neighbours. A jail-like life begins for her as the situation gets more complicated. The play discusses the notion of conservatism in the borders of private life and introduces an extraordinary point of view to an ordinary life by striking a blow at reality. ‘When in Rome’ is a critical comedy having the rhythym of vodvil.

Language (8:30PM)

Written by: Şenay Tanrıvermiş
Directed by: Yeşim Özsoy Gülan
Performers: Yeşim Ceren Bozoğlu, Şirvan Akan, Yağız Can Konyalı

A modern flat where a middle-class family lives, the day is like today. Arzu lost one of a pair of Marrylou mitt made of silk cashmere and is incessantly in search of it. What a weird country this is! Everything and everybody continuously disappear. ‘Language’ talks about the daily life of a social class which is about to disappear, from a grotesque perspective. The play mixes the colloquial language with the register of politics and scents out the loss in a fantastic atmosphere. ‘Language’ has a very keen understanding of humour and introduces a brand new and brave perspective to the field of playwriting.

No:2/1 & HSKTR & Housetop

(Play-Reading)

*There will be a discussion with the playwrights after the performances

No:2/1 (1:00PM)

Written by: Duygu Süreyya Yalçın
Directed by: Yusuf Demirkol
Performers: Bertan Dirikolu, Emre Yetim, İnci Nur Daşdemir, Şafak Ersözlü

The government authorities announce that the ones who are older than 70 are going to be killed. They raid houses and take old people. The streets witness genocides. Everybody should give the old in their houses in charge of the government authorities. All descents living with their parents undergo a very hard examination. ‘No:2/1’, an experimentation on dystopia which does not forget the reality of Turkey, is a conflict between father and son wandering around the borders between hatred and conscience.

HSKTR (3:00PM)

Written by: Doğu Polat
Directed by: Beyti Engin
Performers: Emrah Eren, Bekir Çiçekdemir, Ozan Ayhan, Ali Kil, Bulut Akkale, Arzu Akın

Young clerk secretary comes to judicial court on the first day of his career but nothing is as he has imagined. All of a sudden, he finds himself in a court case in which he is being judged. As he speaks more and more, his speech turns into an exhibit against himself. Consequently, he is accused of being a terrorist in an organization called HSKTR. ‘HSKTR’ reminds us of a burlesque in folk tradition both in language and content. It also proposes a staging rehearsal between genres thanks to its grotesque atmosphere.

Housetop (5:00PM)

Written by: Buket Ketbağa
Directed by: Ayşe Lebriz Berkem
Performers: Tansu Biçer, Devrim Evin, Nergiz Acar

Sedat opens the doors of his house to Ömer whom he does not know well. Ömer is previously a court officer, Sedat a lawyer. They promote their relations in a way that they turn the necessary borders of social life upside down as well as testing the borders of private life in the same house. ‘Dam’, re-handles the relationship between property and power from a humanist perspective.
